Fire is originally the natural disturbance, caused by the thunder, in boreal forests. However, due to the human activity, the disturbacne regime of forest fire has been changing to modify the structure and function of boreal forests. To understand the basic mechanism through which fire affects vegetation, we are investigating the fire influence on tree regeneration and soil nutrient properties with special focus on the charcoal function in Russian and Alaskan forests. The basic knowledge about the underlying influencing mechanism will help us to predict the consequence of increasing fires in boreal forests ecosystems.
